Your cholesterol target levels depend on your level of heart disease risk. Your doctor will calculate this risk based on your age, gender, cholesterol levels, and general health. You can calculate it yourself using our target cholesterol levels and heart disease risk calculator. Regardless of your level of heart disease risk, the goal is to lower your LDL cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol) by at least 50%. Your doctor can determine what specific number that should be for you.
For a more detailed discussion of cholesterol target levels and to learn more about what your targets should be, see Setting goals. Cholesterol target levels are an important way to evaluate the success of your treatment. Talk to your doctor about what to expect from your cholesterol treatment and how to tell if your treatment is working.
