Your fertility specialist may consider trying other ways first before considering assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Sometimes, they may suggest medications to improve sperm production or recommend other treatment methods to correct any medical conditions that may be causing poor sperm quality.
When no obvious cause of poor sperm quality is found, ART such as intrauterine insemination (IUI, where the sperm are injected directly into the uterus) or in-vitro fertilization (IVF, where the egg is removed from the woman's uterus and the man's sperm are combined and fertilized in the laboratory, and the embryo placed back in the woman's uterus) may be recommended. Sometimes, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI, where the sperm is injected directly into the egg) is recommended.
